So…..how old do you think I am? That can be a scary question. How many times have you been presented with that question and in that split second had several thoughts race through your mind such as” Hmmm, I know she can’t be too old she has small children” or, “Gosh he is in such good physical shape he has to be fairly young”. Yet another,” I think she said she graduated high school the same year I did”. You quickly try to asses this question to come up with an answer that won’t offend the asker. The truth is you just can’t tell.
There are a few physical “age indicators” that are outwardly visible. Posture, hair, and skin are amongst the more common. Someone that stands tall and walks with a smooth stride would indicate a healthy skeletal system with strong supportive muscles. Hair with luster and little to no gray suggests youth. And, of course we all associate wrinkled skin with old age. What about teeth? Baby teeth start appearing at approximately 4 months old. In elementary school we start losing our baby teeth to make room for our permanent teeth. By our early teens all of our permanent teeth have presented themselves and for some braces are applied. At this time in our lives our permanent teeth are usually healthy, strong and pearly white.
Things that make us happy are rewarded with smiles. When we are very young we smile freely and with confidence. As we progress into our teens we use our smile to communicate…perhaps to flirt. As we advance into adulthood our smiles are used to dazzle on interviews or to show confidence in our abilities. As parents we use our smile to show love, approval and pride towards our children. The power of the smile is unequivocally one of our most powerful forms of communication. What does your smile say?
Take a few minutes to look at yourself in the mirror. If you have healthy gums with pearly white teeth, then you have a youthful looking mouth. But if you look in the mirror and see gum recession, flat or worn down teeth, teeth that are grey or dark in color then your smile may be aging you beyond your years.
