Repairing the latest fracture may solve the immediate problem. Still, it may not stop another tooth from breaking. A lasting solution begins by finding out why the damage keeps happening.

Is It Normal for Teeth to Keep Breaking?

No. Teeth can wear with age, but they should not continue breaking during normal use. Healthy teeth are built to handle the forces of biting and chewing. Enamel covers the visible part of each tooth and protects the softer layers beneath it.

Not every broken tooth looks dramatic. Some fractures are easy to see, while others hide below an old filling or crown.

Common signs include:

A root canal treated tooth that breaks should be evaluated quickly. In some cases, the tooth can still be restored. In others, the crack may extend too far below the gum line.

A filling may repair a smaller area of decay or damage. Still, another filling may not be the best choice when a little strong tooth remains. A larger restoration can leave the tooth more vulnerable to fracture.

An onlay covers and supports part of the chewing surface. It can protect weakened cusps while preserving more natural teeth than a full crown in selected cases.

A crown covers the visible part of a weakened tooth. Crowns may help protect teeth with large fillings, major fractures, or extensive damage. However, the bite must be evaluated so the new crown does not receive too much force.

A root canal may be needed when a crack, cavity, or injury reaches the tissue inside the tooth. After treatment, the tooth may also need a protective restoration. Root canal treatment cannot save every cracked tooth. The result depends on the location and depth of the fracture.

A tooth that cannot be restored may need removal. A dental implant can replace the missing tooth in selected patients. However, implants also need a stable bite and healthy support.

When many teeth have lost structure, rebuilding one tooth at a time may not restore balance. A more complete plan may be needed to restore tooth length, shape, chewing function, and bite support.

This process may involve bonding, onlays, veneers, crowns, implants, or a combination of treatments. The goal is not simply to make the teeth look new. The restored teeth must also work together.
