TMJ Treatment

TMJ Treatment

TMJ is a disorder that can cause problems with eating, talking, moving the jaw, or even hearing.

TMJ Disorder (TMD) can cause jaw pain, facial tension, headaches, and many other symptoms. For some people, the pain is severe and unrelenting. Especially when you don’t know what’s causing it. The reason for all these problems might be traced back to your jaw joint alignment and position.

TMJ Disorder

Jaw pain, face and neck pain, headaches without a trigger, ringing in the ears are all symptoms of TMJ disorder. TMJ sometimes called TMD, is a misalignment of your jaw that can lead to overactive muscles, pinched nerves, and an off-centered vertebrae. This can have a negative impact on your body in a number of ways. Often when this happens, patients see a doctor, chiropractor, or other specialist without results. Keep reading to learn more about the symptoms, causes and treatments for TMJ.

TMJ (TMD) Symptoms:

  • Pain or tenderness in your jaw
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Neck, shoulder, head pain
  • Hearing problems or ringing in the ears
  • Tooth aches or dizziness
  • Chipped, broken, worn down teeth
  • Jaw that “gets stuck,” locks or goes out of place
  • Jaw clicking and popping

It’s very common for these symptoms to get diagnosed as a different condition when it is actually caused by an unstable bite. An unstable bite can arise when the three parts of your chewing system: your teeth, jaw joint, and chewing muscles cannot function properly because of the way your teeth fit together.

Overtime, the stress of an unstable bite can lead to muscle and jaw joint pain as well as other issues.

What Causes TMJ Disorders (TMD)?

TMJ (TMD) disorders have many causes. Sometimes the cause is too much strain on the jaw joints (bruxism: involuntary clenching or grinding of the teeth). In other cases, trauma (injury to the jaw, the head, or the neck) causes it. The problem is, the symptoms can look like other conditions or health problems. For this reason, get a proper diagnosis from a qualified trained dentist.

TMJ Treatment: BioRejuvenation for Long-Term Results

Biorejuvenation is a full mouth rehabilitation focusing on restoring your chewing system to the optimal position, which relaxes your jaw joint muscles and reduces stress on your teeth. This type of dentistry corrects bite alignment issues to help patients retain as much of their tooth structure as possible. It is the process we use to keep your bite balanced without having to wear an orthotic appliance forever. We also use it to treat

sleep disorders like snoring and sleep apnea. That’s because some dental conditions often accompany airway problems. Thanks to his advanced training, airway-centered dentist Dr. Villadiego who understands the connection between breathing and the structures of the mouth as well as the face, can use this approach to treat a growing list of oral and overall health concerns that can be tied to sleep issues.

This form of dentistry ensures that:

Our Process: Diagnose – Balance – Restore

  • Diagnose: the source of the problem.

  • Restore: teeth to the right size and shape.

The Process

Diagnose: First we start with a preliminary exam. Using this information, we can determine if your chewing system is imbalanced. We also determine possible root causes of the problem and work with you to develop an individualized plan.

Balance: Next we balance the chewing system. To do this, we use an orthotic device which is a diagnostic tool that determines the root cause of your imbalances. By relaxing your jaw muscles, we seek to reduce stress on this particular joint. As a result, other facial muscles will also relax, and you’ll have less visible facial stress.

Some of the amazing consequences of using the orthotic is that it alleviates jaw and neck pain. You will also have less headaches and facial pain (but it is not a permanent solution).

Restore: Once the orthotic device balances the bite, we move onto the next part of our treatment plan, permanently balancing the chewing system. To do this, we restore your damaged teeth to their original, youthful shape and function.
